With the latest Be.**Smart** Connector update, **files can now move automatically between Autodesk Forma and Bluebeam** on a set schedule - no manual action to initiate the transfer required. 

This brings a **new level of automation to review and markup workflows**, helping teams stay aligned without extra coordination.

## **From connected** workflows **to automated** workflows

When Autodesk Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud) serves as the common data environment, and Bluebeam is used for reviews and markups, files need to move reliably between both platforms - without breaking version control.

From its first release, the Be.**Smart** Connector removed the need to download and upload files manually. Instead, teams could **transfer PDFs securely from cloud to cloud between Autodesk Forma and Bluebeam**, helping ensure that:

- The right file versions are exchanged
- Project information stays aligned across platforms
- Version control is maintained without local file handling

This helped eliminate common issues such as delays, misplaced files, and uncertainty about which version was the latest.

However, one step still required user action: starting the transfer.

Based on customer feedback, we’ve now taken the next step by adding scheduled file transfers. The new Scheduler automates when transfers occur, allowing files to move between Autodesk Forma and Bluebeam automatically - without anyone needing to trigger the process manually.

The new Scheduler lets teams automate routine file movement between Autodesk Forma and Bluebeam Studio Projects or Sessions.

Once configured, the workflow:
- Transfers new or updated PDFs automatically
- Sends files to Bluebeam for markup
- Returns reviewed files to the correct Forma folder
- Runs on a defined schedule - or manually when needed

No more wondering whether the latest file is in the right place.

The Scheduler gives teams more control over how and when files are transferred. Users can choose the folders included in the workflow, set up the recurrence, and run the workflow manually when needed.

Recently, Autodesk signaled a meaningful step in this direction with the announcement of the Revit Public MCP Server Technical Preview. This introduces a more formalized connection layer between AI systems and Revit, something many early adopters have been building through custom middleware.

It represents an important shift from purely custom integrations toward platform-supported AI connectivity within BIM tools.

In many ways, this is how the industry begins moving from possibility toward practicality.

At the same time, as a technical preview, it reinforces the current reality. While connectivity is becoming more standardized, the broader challenges of deployment, support, governance, and scale across organizations still remain.
 
## What It Actually Takes Today

Many current AI-driven Revit demonstrations rely on a layered system that includes a Large Language Model, a middleware connection such as an MCP server, a local runtime environment, a Revit add-in, and a connection layer tying everything together.

Individually, none of these components are particularly difficult for someone with a development or advanced BIM background.

Together, they form a system that most end users were never trained to build, manage, or troubleshoot.

Alternative approaches exist, including cloud-based integrations and enterprise-developed add-ins, but they introduce their own deployment and support considerations.

What is emerging is not a replacement of this complexity, but a transition.


The industry is moving through a maturity curve: from fully custom integrations, to emerging platform-supported connectivity, and eventually toward fully operationalized, enterprise-ready AI embedded within design workflows. 

Standardizing the connection layer is a critical step forward, but on its own, it is not enough to make these solutions scalable, supportable, or production-ready across organizations.

A BIM Manager or Design Technology leader can absolutely stand up this type of workflow.

**Troubleshooting for integration users:** Users may need to open Bluebeam Studio inside the Bluebeam desktop app and log into Studio with their new email address to re-authenticate. Once that step is completed they shouldn’t have any issues launching Studio through their integration.

## Data Is the Foundation, and the Bottleneck

Nearly all firms agree that data is their most valuable asset, yet many struggle to fully leverage it due to fragmentation and interoperability challenges. Data sprawl across disconnected systems remains one of the biggest barriers to meaningful transformation.

As AI adoption grows, so does the recognition that intelligence is only as strong as the data behind it. Industry leaders are shifting their focus away from software silos and toward data-centric strategies, normalizing information, leveraging APIs, and developing internal tools that treat data as the true source of truth.

Leading organizations are responding with clear policies, AI literacy initiatives, and project-level data execution plans. These frameworks help teams understand what information can be shared, how tools should be used, and how compliance requirements, such as CMMC and client-specific mandates, are met.

Rather than focusing solely on tools, firms are emphasizing intentional decision-making, understanding intent, risk, and outcomes before choosing technology. This mindset is becoming essential as regulatory expectations continue to evolve.
Interoperability, Open BIM, and Workflow-Centered Thinking

As conversations around interoperability mature, many firms are reframing how they think about standards and collaboration.

Standards such as IFC 5.0 support this vision, but industry leaders agree that true progress comes from understanding workflows first, then applying technology intentionally.

## Letting Go of Legacy Practices

One of the clearest signals of industry evolution is a growing willingness to retire outdated workflows. Manual, end-of-project quality control processes, disconnected tracking systems, and overreliance on single-model sources of truth are increasingly viewed as risks rather than safeguards.

Firms are recognizing that automation, continuous QA/QC, and data-driven checks are not just efficiency gains, they are essential for managing scale, reducing liability, and maintaining consistency.


## Looking Ahead

The AEC industry is not undergoing a single transformation, but many, technological, cultural, and contractual. The firms best positioned for 2026 are those grounding innovation in strong data foundations, clear governance, and a deep understanding of their workflows.

As leaders navigate the pace and pressure of change, there is also a growing recognition that this transformation is not something firms should tackle in isolation.

AI will continue to evolve, but its role is becoming clearer, not as a replacement for expertise, but as an accelerator of it. As the industry moves forward, success will depend less on chasing what’s new and more on building systems that are intentional, adaptable, and resilient.
